The Seven
Deadly Fallacies
of The Western Diet
The quest for superior nutrition has never been easy. Historically,
it has demanded a deft combination of art and instinct, whether it
is a skill of the hunter/gardener, or the wisdom of the cook. Today
we need the education to discern the very slick marketing spins with
words like, “Natural, Nutritious, Enriched, Cage Free, etc.,
with what is truly whole foods, natural and nutritious. Most ‘food’
items using these words come in boxes or packages which is certainly
convenient, but this convenience comes with a price: the loss of fundamental
skills and understanding on how to nourish our family and ourselves.
The devastating result of adopting conveniences without preserving
the goal of superior nutrition can be seen in the following list of
marketing falsehoods:
1. Chlorinated and fluoridated water is safe to drink
2. Grains that are processed, refined and fortified with a few synthetic
vitamins build a strong body.
3. Animal and dairy fats are dangerous to your heart and vascular
system,
BUT synthetic fat such as hydrogenated oil, and oleo products such
as
margarine, are healthful.
4. Refined sugar is a food.
5. Pasteurized dairy is a nutritious source of minerals, vitamins
and protein.
6. Vegetables and fruits grown on chemically treated soil are safe
and
healthy to eat.
7. Animals raised in feed lots and supplemented with hormones and
antibiotics are a safe, healthy food source. |
